Reconstructing disease transmission dynamics from animal movements and test data

Disease outbreaks are often accompanied by a wealth of data, usually in the form of movements, locations and tests. This data is a valuable resource in which data scientists and epidemiologists can reconstruct the transmission pathways and parameters and thus devise control strategies. However, the spatiotemporal data gathered can be both vast whilst at the same time incomplete or contain error...

Reconstructing weighted networks from dynamics.

We present a method that reconstructs both the links and their relative coupling strength of bidirectional weighted networks. Our method requires only measurements of node dynamics as input. Using several examples, we demonstrate that our method can give accurate results for weighted random and weighted scale-free networks with both linear and nonlinear dynamics.

Reconstructing Mammalian Sleep Dynamics with Data Assimilation

Data assimilation is a valuable tool in the study of any complex system, where measurements are incomplete, uncertain, or both. It enables the user to take advantage of all available information including experimental measurements and short-term model forecasts of a system. Although data assimilation has been used to study other biological systems, the study of the sleep-wake regulatory network...

Global Patterns of Geographic Range Size in Birds

Large-scale patterns of spatial variation in species geographic range size are central to many fundamental questions in macroecology and conservation biology. However, the global nature of these patterns has remained contentious, since previous studies have been geographically restricted and/or based on small taxonomic groups. Here, using a database on the breeding distributions of birds, we re...

Geographic range size and determinants of avian species richness.

Geographic patterns in species richness are mainly based on wide-ranging species because their larger number of distribution records has a disproportionate contribution to the species richness counts. Here we demonstrate how this effect strongly influences our understanding of what determines species richness. Using both conventional and spatial regression models, we show that for sub-Saharan A...
